Born and raised on Long Island, New York, Mariah Carey moved to New York when she was 17 to begin pursuing her musical career. Sony Music head Tommy Mattola signed Carey to Columbia Records upon hearing her demo tape. Her self-titled debut album, released in 1990, yielded four No. 1 singles and earned Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist. The multiplatinum albums Emotions (1991), Music Box (1993), Merry Christmas (1994), Daydream (1995) and Butterfly (1997) followed. Her success, however, came at a price: One year after Virgin signed her for a staggering $80 million in 2000, Carey suffered a public breakdown. Critics and audiences had panned her movie Glitter and the accompanying soundtrack released that year. After splitting with Virgin in 2001, Carey started her own label, MonarC Music, and released her ninth album, Charmbracelet.Reviews
