Vocalist-guitarist Jack White and drummer Meg White formed this minimalist rock & roll duo in Detroit in 1997. The White Stripes, who combine punk and blues with emotive, soulful vocals, released their self-titled debut in 1999 and earned national attention on tours with Pavement and Sleater-Kinney over the next two years. Their next two albums, De Stijl (2000) and White Blood Cells (2001), received tremendous critical praise, and with their fourth album, 2003s Elephant, they achieved commercial success. It went to No. 6 on the Billboard 200.Reviews
