Atlanta-born Chan Marshall moved to New York in the early 1990s and began performing as Cat Power. With help from Sonic Youths drummer Steve Shelley, she released her first two albums in 1995 and 1996. Her major-label debut, 1997s What Would the Community Think?, and follow-up, 1998s Moonpix, showcased her raw, emotional vocals. In 2000 she released The Covers Record, on which she covered the songs of Moby, Lou Reed and Pavement, among others. Her 2003 release, You Are Free, was critically heralded for its haunting ballads.Reviews
