Singer-guitarist Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno started Spoon in Austin, Texas, in 1994. With its blend of indie rock and punk, their debut album, Telephono (1996), received critical praise. After recruiting Andy Maguire on bass, Spoon began touring with bands like Pavement and Guided by Voices. Subsequent releases, including the EP Soft Effects (1997) and the album A Series of Sneaks (1998), were also well received, and in 2001 Spoon became a critical sensation with the album Girls Can Tell.
