The Shins
James Mercer (vocals, guitar), Jesse Sandoval (drums), and Marty Crandall (keyboards) formed the Shins in 1997 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as a side project to their band Flake Music. Neal Langford (bass), also of Flake Music, joined a few years later. Sub Pop Records released the Shins' debut album, Oh, Inverted World, in 2001. The album became an indie-rock favorite and expanded their fan base. Dave Hernandez (who had briefly been a band member early on) replaced Langford before the release of the group's second album, the critically well-regarded Chutes Too Narrow (2003).
