Duran Duran
When this Birmingham, England, quintet donned their girlfriends' makeup and fused the best of glam-rock with elements of punk and funk, the world took notice. By the time "Hungry Like the Wolf" became a hit in 1983, Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Andy Taylor, Roger Taylor and Simon Le Bon were the right boys with the right image at the right time: MTV was just underway, asserting the primacy of "look" over zeal and musical chops.
Their first album,
Duran Duran, was released on Capitol Records in 1981, and their follow-up albums
Rio (1982) and
Seven and the Ragged Tiger (1983) ensured consistent chart presence through the first half of that decade. In 2004, after being together 26 years, Duran Duran released
Astronaut, their 11th studio album.
