Few figures dominate the history of rock & roll and popular culture like John Lennon (born on October 9, 1940, in Liverpool, England). As a founding member of the Beatles, Lennon helped craft perfect pop songs imbued with equal measures of näiveté, wit, optimism and acute social critique. While at the pinnacle of fame, Lennon, along with wife Yoko Ono, became tireless advocates for global peace. Following the Beatles' breakup in 1970, the band members were each faced with the daunting task of crafting a successful solo career. Lennon's best solo work includes his albums John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band (1970) and Imagine (1971). During the latter half of the '70s, Lennon devoted himself to staying at home and raising his son Sean. In 1980 Lennon returned to music with Double Fantasy, a collaboration with Yoko. The album featured a reflective Lennon glancing back at the past two decades of growth, contentment, wild turbulence and excess, while also looking forward to the unwritten future. Later that year, on December 8, 1980, deranged fan Mark David Chapman shot and killed John Lennon as he stood in front of his New York apartment.Reviews
