Jeff Beck
Born on June 24, 1944, in Wallington, Surrey, England, Beck replaced Eric Clapton as lead guitarist of the Yardbirds from 1964 to 1966. In ’67 he formed the Jeff Beck Group, which featured singer Rod Stewart and a loud guitar and vocal style that laid the groundwork for heavy-metal music (though they’d also break into some jazzy fusion as well). The group broke up in 1971. Beck won a pair of Best Rock Instrumental Grammys for different projects, but it is widely believed that his fame and influence could have left a stronger mark had he remained in a partnership with a strong vocalist.
