Guitarist Dan Estrin, bassist Markku Lappalainen, drummer Chris Hesse and singer Doug Robb formed the nü-metal band Hoobastank in 1994, while they were still high school students in Los Angeles. Their self-released debut effort, 1998's They Sure Don't Make Basketball Shorts Like They Used To, gained the attention of Island Records, which released their self-titled full-length album in 2001. It went platinum, thanks to the singles "Crawling in the Dark" and "Running Away." They released their follow-up, The Reason, in 2003.Reviews
