Born on May 22, 1959, in Manchester, England, melancholy alternative-rock innovator Steven Patrick Morrissey (a.k.a. Morrissey) is known as a poetic and often cynical singer-songwriter. He and guitarist Johnny Marr led the Smiths from 1983 to 1987. The Smiths eponymous 1984 debut LP was a smash hit in the U.K., and their follow-up, Meat Is Murder, entered the British charts at No. 1, but the band only ever managed to garner a modest cult following in the U.S. After disbanding the Smiths in 1987, Morrissey launched his solo career with Viva Hate in 1988.Reviews
