Norah Jones
Norah Jones, the daughter of famed Indian musician Ravi Shankar, attended the Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Dallas, where she won the Down Beat Student Music Award for Best Jazz Vocalist and Best Original Composition in 1996 and 1997. While working toward a degree in jazz piano at the University of North Texas, Jones spent the summer in Greenwich Village and promptly moved there to try her hand at the music scene. She formed a group with guitarist-songwriter Jesse Harris, bassist Lee Alexander and drummer Dan Rieser. They recorded demos for Blue Note Records and the label signed Jones in 2001. Her debut, Come Away With Me, was released in 2002, when she was 22. The jazz-influenced acoustic pop album received rave reviews, sold 18 million copies worldwide and garnered Jones eight Grammy Awards. Her second album, Feels Like Home, followed in 2004.
