Changing their name from the Warlocks in 1965, the Grateful Dead formed in San Francisco amid the burgeoning psychedelic hippie scene there. With singer-songwriter-guitarist Jerry Garcia, guitarist Bob Weir, bassist Phil Lesh and drummers Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart as the core members, the Dead spawned one of the largest and most loyal cult of fans, the Deadheads, who made a lifestyle out of following the band around the country. The Dead continued to tour until Garcias death from a heart attack while he was in rehab in Forest Knolls, California, at age 53.Reviews
