Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton (born Eric Patrick Clapp in England in1945) earned a reputation as one of the best rock guitarists of his generation through his work with the Yardbirds, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers, Cream and Blind Faith in the '60s. After releasing a self-titled solo album in 1970, Clapton formed Derek and the Dominos and released Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs. The band broke up before completing a second album in 1972, and Clapton struggled with a heroin addiction. His live album, Eric Clapton's Rainbow Concert, recorded at the Rainbow Theatre in London on January 13, 1973, marked his comeback, and he released 461 Ocean Boulevard, which included the No. 1 single "I Shot the Sheriff," in 1974. His most popular albums include Slowhand (1977), which spawned the hit singles "Cocaine," "Lay Down Sally" and "Wonderful Tonight," and MTV Unplugged (1992), his best-selling album to date. Clapton met with tragedy on March 20, 1991, when his 4-year-old son died from a tragic fall from his New York City apartment building window. The song "Tears in Heaven," written in his son's memory, became a huge hit. He followed up in 1992 with the critically praised blues album From the Cradle, which went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and won a Grammy for Best Tradition Blues Album.
