Singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry formed R.E.M., widely hailed as the creators of alternative rock, in Athens, Georgia, in 1980. Their signature jangle, cryptic lyrics and DIY aesthetic produced a reverberation in the American underground. In 1981 they released the single Radio Free Europe, and their debut LP, 1983s Murmur, was critically heralded. Released in 1987, Document was their first platinum-seller, followed by many, many more. Berry retired from the band in 1997.Reviews
