Vince Clarke (formerly of Depeche Mode and Yaz) and Andy Bell formed synth-pop dance outfit Erasure in London in 1985. In 1988 Erasure scored their first American hit with “Chains of Love.” Although they frequently made the charts in the U.K., Erasure were never as popular in the U.S. Their second U.S. hit, ”Always,“ came eight years later, from 1994’s I Say I Say I Say.
