Enya
Born in Ireland, Eithne Ni Bhraonain launched her career in 1979 when she joined her older siblings' band, Clannad, as a keyboardist. After three years she left to record film and TV scores with producer Nick Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan; they provided the score for the BBC TV series The Celts, a soundtrack that became Enya's first album in 1986. Her second album, Watermark (1988), featuring the hit "Orinoco Flow," was an instant and unexpected success. The album, which showcased a blend of new-age synthesizers, folk melodies and trancelike vocals, went on to sell 8 million copies worldwide, establishing her as an international sensation. Her third album, Shepherd Moon (1991), was another huge hit, selling over 10 million copies worldwide and remaining in the Top 200 for almost four years. Enya then kept her fans waiting until December 1995, when she released Memory of Trees, which entered the U.S. charts at No. 9. She released a greatest-hits collection, Paint the Sky With Stars: The Best of Enya, in 1997 and an original album, Day Without Rain, in late 2000.
