Born on July 22, 1973, to folk stars Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle in Rhinebeck, New York, alt-pop singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright grew up with his mother in Montreal. He started playing piano at 6 years old and touring with his mother, aunt Anna and sister, Martha, at age 13. At 14, he was nominated for a Best Song Genie (a Canadian Oscar). Wainwright’s 1998 self-titled debut was widely hailed as one of the best releases of the year.
