Earth, Wind & Fire
Brothers Maurice and Verdine White formed Earth, Wind & Fire, the funk, R&B and disco giants of the ’70s, in Chicago in 1969. With a high-pitched vocal range (Philip Bailey joined the band in 1971) and a funky bass and horns section, EW&F scored their first chart success with “Mighty Mighty” in 1974. They grooved through the rest of the ’70s with hits like “Shining Star” (from their first platinum-seller, 1975’s The Way of the World), “Fantasy,” “September” and “Boogie Wonderland.”
