Dolly Parton
Dolly Parton has become one of the most beloved artists in country music. Raised as one of 12 children on a farm in Locust Ridge, Tennessee, she began playing guitar at age 7, and appeared on the Grand Ole Opry at 13. After signing to Mercury when she was 14 and gaining popularity through her duets with Porter Wagoner, Parton scored her first No. 1 country hit, Joshua, in 1970. Parton was one of the first country artists to successfully cross over into the pop mainstream, with both her music and starring roles in movies, like the hit
9 to 5. In 1985 Parton opened Dollywood, her namesake theme park. Partons popularity faltered in the late 80s as country musics popularity grew, but she returned to her roots in the early 2000s with her well-received bluegrass albums, most notably
The Grass Is Blue.
