Born Earl Simmons on December 19, 1970, in Baltimore, DMX (Dark Man X) was raised in Yonkers, New York. He released the single Born Loser in 1992 on Ruffhouse (a subsidiary of Columbia Records), but left the label soon after. He signed with Def Jam in 1997, first making guest appearances on songs by LL Cool J, Mase, Onyx, Ice Cube and the LOX, and then releasing his own single, Get at Me Dog, in 1998. The song became a hit and generated anticipation for his full-length debut, Its Dark and Hell Is Hot. Produced by Swizz Beatz and Dame Grease, the album debuted at No. 1 and went four-times platinum. In 1998 he costarred with Nas and Method Man in Hype Williams film directorial debut, Belly. That same year, DMX released Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, which went three-times platinum. In 1999 he appeared on the Ruff Ryders collectives compilation album Ryde or Die, Vol. 1, which also featured Eve and the LOX, and he released his third album, ...And Then There Was X, which went five-times platinum and produced the hit Party Up (Up in Here). DMX appeared in the action film Romeo Must Die, starring Jet Li and Aaliyah, in 2000. Not long after, he was briefly incarcerated at the Erie County Correctional Facility for marijuana possession and driving with a suspended license in Cheektowaga, New York. In 2001 he costarred with Steven Seagal in the hit action movie Exit Wounds and also released his fourth-straight No. 1 album, The Great Depression. He teamed up with Jet Li again in 2003 for Cradle 2 the Grave, another hit at the box office.Reviews
