Born Calvin Broadus in Long Beach, California, in 1972, Snoop (given the nickname by his mother) began making homemade tapes as a teenager with friend Warren G, who eventually passed one on to his half-brother, Dr. Dre. In 1992 Dre enlisted Snoop to appear with him on the title track for the Deep Cover soundtrack and on his debut album, The Chronic, released on Death Row Records. An arrest in connection with a drive-by shooting lent credibility to Snoops gansta rapper image, boosting the release of his own debut album, Doggystyle, in 1993. The album, which included the Top 10 singles "Whats My Name?" and "Gin & Juice," debuted at No. 1 and went on to sell over four million copies. Since the late 90s Snoop has appeared in a number of films, including The Wash (2001) and Baby Boy (2001).
