One of the most popular synth-pop acts of the '80s, Depeche Mode had a penchant for writing dark, melancholic songs, including "Blasphemous Rumours," "People Are People" and "Personal Jesus." Their success continued into the '90s, with the album Songs of Faith and Devotion (1993), which entered the charts at No. 1. Songwriter Martin Gore's emotionally extreme lyrical themes were reflected in singer Dave Gahan's real-life grapple with heroin and depression. In 1995 he attempted suicide by slashing his wrists; the next year he overdosed on heroin and cocaine but recovered. After a four-year hiatus, Depeche Mode made a strong comeback in 1997 with Ultra.Reviews
