De La Soul

Formed in Amityville, New York, in 1987, the trio (Pasemaster Mase, Posdnuos and Trugoy the Dove) was part of the Native Tongues crew in New York, which also included A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, the Jungle Brothers, Blacksheep, and Monie Love. In opposition to gangsta rap, De La Soul advocated peace and love with clever, playful lyrics on their 1989 debut, 3 Feet High and Rising. They released Art Official Intelligence: Bionix in December 2001.
