Suzanne Vega

Folk-pop singer-songwriter-guitarist Suzanne Vega was born on July 11, 1959, in Santa Monica, California and raised in Manhattan’s Spanish Harlem. She began playing guitar and writing music as a teenager and played in Greenwich Village folk clubs while attending Barnard College. Her 1985 eponymous debut was a major hit in Britain, but it wasn’t until her sophomore effort, 1987’s Solitude Standing, that Vega won over American listeners, helped by the surprising hit “Luka.” Vega’s success ushered in a wave of female contemporary folk singers.
