The most successful '80s new wave band, the Cars melded doo-wop-influenced vocal arrangements with late-'70s new wave instrumentation. Formed in Boston in 1976, the band was composed of Ric Ocasek on vocals and guitar, Benjamin Orr on vocals and bass, Elliot Easton on guitar, David Robinson on drums and Greg Hawkes on keyboards. Their 1978 self-titled debut album shot up the charts on the strength of the classic singles "Just What I Needed," "Good Times Roll" and "My Best Friend's Girl." Next came Candy-O in1979, which included the hit "Let's Go," followed by Panorama in 1980 and Shake It Up in 1981. With the advent of MTV, the videos for the singles "You Might Think" and "Drive" help propel 1984's Heartbeat City to No. 3. The Cars released only one more album, 1987's Door to Door, before disbanding. Any hope for a Cars reunion ended with the death of Benjamin Orr from cancer in 2000.Reviews
