Cat Stevens
Folk-rock hero Steven Demetre Georgiou (a.k.a. Cat Stevens) was born on July 21, 1947, in London. He began performing in college, and a record producer brought him into the studio to record. He gained recognition as a songwriter, but after a number of years of modest chart success in the U.K., he broke through to the U.S. charts with 1970s
Tea for the Tillerman. In addition to hits like Wild World, Moon Shadow and Peace Train, Stevens scored the soundtrack to the cult classic
Harold and Maude in 1972. In 1977 Stevens converted to Islam and changed his name to Yusef Islam.
