The Eagles
The Eagles were formed in Los Angeles 1971 by guitarist Glenn Frey, singer-drummer Don Henley, singer-bassist Randy Meisner and singer-instrumentalist Bernie Leadon. After playing together as a backup band for Linda Ronstadt, they signed with David Geffen's Asylum Records and released their self-titled debut album in 1972. On the strength of the singles "Witchy Woman," "Peaceful Easy Feeling" and "Take It Easy," the country-rock album quickly went gold. For the Eagles' third album, On the Border (1974), they hired producer Bill Szymczyk, who brought in guitarist Don Felder. The more rock-oriented One of These Nights, released the following year, was a smash hit. It featured the Top 5 singles "One of These Nights," "Take It to the Limit" and the Grammy-winning "Lyin' Eyes." Leadon left the band that year to be replaced by former James Gang guitarist Joe Walsh. After touring extensively, they released Eagles: Their Greatest Hits 1971–1975 in '76. The chart-topping album was the first to be certified platinum and went on to become one of the best-selling albums of all time in the U.S. Hotel California followed in '77 and went platinum in one week, eventually selling more than 15 million copies worldwide. Meisner left the band after completing the Hotel California world tour and was replaced by Timothy B. Schmit. And in 1979 the Eagles scored another No. 1, multiplatinum-selling album with The Long Run, which included the hit title cut and "Heartache Tonight." Strife within the band led to the Eagles' breakup, which was officially announced in 1982. They reunited for an MTV concert special in 1994 and toured for a year supporting the album that came out of it, Hell Freezes Over. The Eagles were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.
