Burning Spear
Winston Rodney formed roots-reggae band Burning Spear in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1969, with bass vocalist Rupert Willington. After releasing their first single that year, they added second tenor Delroy Hinds. In 1973 they released their debut album,
Studio One Presents Burning Spear, and two years later released the critically acclaimed
Marcus Garvey, backed by the powerhouse studio reggae band the Black Disciples. After the group released their follow-up in 1976,
Man in the Hills, Rodney split with Willington and Hinds, but retained the Burning Spear name. He has continued touring and releasing albums up through the early 2000s, his latest being 2003s
Free Man.
