Singer-songwriter Julian Casablancas (son of Elite modeling agency president John Casablancas), guitarist Nick Valensi and drummer Fabrizio Moretti began to play together in 1998 while students at a Manhattan prep school. They soon added bassist Nikolai Fraiture, a friend from another Manhattan prep school, and guitarist Albert Hammond Jr., an NYU film school student who knew Cassablancas from a Swiss boarding school.
