Singer-songwriter Julian Casablancas (son of Elite modeling agency president John Casablancas), guitarist Nick Valensi and drummer Fabrizio Moretti began to play together in 1998 while students at a Manhattan prep school. They soon added bassist Nikolai Fraiture, a friend from another Manhattan prep school, and guitarist Albert Hammond Jr., an NYU film school student who knew Cassablancas from a Swiss boarding school. The Strokes began rocking small NYC clubs in 1999. By 2001, the British press started a hype machine surrounding them and their debut LP, Is This It?
