Friends and neighbors Maynard James Keenan (vocals), Danny Carey (drums), Adam Jones (guitar) and Paul D’Amour (bass) formed this alternative metal band in 1990. Tool garnered enough buzz from their EP Opiate to land them spots on tour with bigger acts like Rage Against the Machine and Henry Rollins. Their debut album, 1993’s Undertow (which included some vocals from Rollins), went platinum after appearing on that year’s Lollapalooza stage. Justin Chancellor replaced D’Amour on bass in 1996.
