Billie Holiday
Eleanora Fagan Gough, a.k.a. Billie Holiday, was born on April 7, 1915, in Baltimore. Considered one of the best jazz singers of all time, Lady Day had a uniquely expressive instrument. Holiday moved to Brooklyn with her mother in 1927. She sang in clubs all around New York and toured with the Count Basie Orchestra and Artie Shaws band. Strange Fruit and her own composition God Bless the Child were among her first hits. On July 17, 1959, Holiday died in New York City as a result of heart and liver disease brought on by years of alcoholism and heroin addiction.
