Belle & Sebastian
While attending university in Glasgow, Scotland, Stuart Murdoch formed the seven-piece Belle & Sebastian as a school project for a music class. Assuming the frontman position on vocals and guitar, Murdoch added violinist Sarah Martin, cellist Isobel Campbell, drummer Richard Colburn, keyboardist Chris Geddes, bassist Stuart David and guitarist Stevie Jackson. They intended the band to be a short-term endeavor. But as a result of the success of their debut album, 1996's
Tigermilk, Belle & Sebastian continued to release music and build a devoted following. In 2002 the band composed the soundtrack for Todd Solondz's film
Storytelling.
