Guitarist-songwriter Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle, vocalist Roger Daltrey and drummer Keith Moon formed this seminal rock band in London in 1964. After releasing one song under the name the High Numbers, the group changed their name to the Who and released the single I Cant Explain, which reached the Top 10 on the British charts. In 1969 the Who released Tommy, a double-album rock opera that was adapted into a play and a movie and23 years latera Broadway musical. Keith Moon died of a drug overdose in 1978 and was replaced by Kenny Jones the following year. In 1981 Townshend recovered from a nearly lethal drug overdose. The band persevered, breaking up in 1983 and reuniting several times throughout the next two decades. On the eve of a 2002 North American tour, Entwhistle died at age 57 in his Las Vegas hotel room when his heart stopped after taking cocaine.Reviews
