Aretha Franklin
The Queen of Soul was born on March 25, 1942, in Memphis, Tennessee. Her gospel-informed, passionate vocals broke the charts in the late ’60s with a series of hits, such as “Respect,” “Chain of Fools” and “Think.” Her success continued through the early ’70s, but the ’80s saw her fall from critical praise, mostly due to ill-suited pop material. Nevertheless, she remains an American pop icon.
