Angie Stone
Neo-soul singer Angie Stone, from Columbia, South Carolina, got her first bit of major exposure as one third of the trio Vertical Hold. Their 1993 R&B/dance hit Seems Youre Much Too Busy reached No.17 on the R&B charts. Stone released her debut solo,
Black Diamond, in 1999 with the help of a stellar roster of producers and musicians, including Lenny Kravitz and (ex-boyfriend) DAngenlo.
Billboard magazine named it as their critics pick for album of the year. Her 2001 release,
Mahogany Soul, also received much critical praise.
