Born Rashied Lynn in Chicagos South Side, Common Sense debuted with the album Can I Borrow a Dollar? in 1992. His 94 follow-up, Resurrection, which contained the underground hip-hop classic "I Used to Love H.E.R.," was critically revered for Commons rhyming technique and original lyrics. Having shortened his name to Common for legal reasons, he released 1997s One Day Itll All Make Sense to more critical praise. Following a number of appearances in songs by like-minded artists (Pete Rock, Black Star, the Roots), he released his most successful album, 2000s Like Water for Chocolate. In 2002 he released Electric Circus, which featured production work from the Roots ?uestlove, Jay Dee and the Neptunes.
