Born in Chicago in 1976, pop singer-songwriter Melissa Lefton began playing piano at age 10. After graduating from the New York University journalism school, Lefton responded to an ad in The Village Voice for a “theatrical female frontperson” who “wanted to be a star” and thus joined the band Product. They gigged around New York and secured a record deal, but Jive Records recruited Lofton for a solo deal. She released her solo debut, Melicious, in 2002.
