Radio On The TV: Week Of November 2, 2009

And now we know.

After the months of guessing which classic album Phish would play on Halloween at their Festival 8 in California, we now have our answer (no, it wasn't MGMT's Oracular Spectacular):

Exile On Main Street.

Yes, the Rolling Stones 1971 LP that's long been a perennial achiever in any Best Album Ever list you'd come across was the album that the reunited Vermont rockers took on. In fact, given the hype, and the eyebrow-raising presence of new albums like MGMT's, it's a surprise that Phish chose such an 'obvious' album. But upon closer inspection, it all makes sense.

Exile is a tour de force, shifting from style to style and genre to genre throughout the album, but retaining a cohesiveness thanks to Jagger and Richards' songwriting, as well as the deliciously swampy vibe that runs through the record. Of course, Phish are no strangers to stylistic jumps, often within one song.

No download yet, but you can watch this YouTubeage, captured from a video screen. Dig them horns (a theme today, see Weezer below). What a beautiful buzz, etc:

Last week, Weezer stopped by Letterman on Thursday AND Friday to perform two from their new Raditude. Changes ahoy: Rivers has dropped the guitar in favor of being a hands free frontman, drummer Patrick Wilson is now second guitarist Patrick Wilson, and superstar session drummer Josh Freese is pitching in on traps. And those are some kickin', near emo-dixieland horns courtesy of the CBS Orchestra. Isn't the world a better place when Weezer is on ('on' meaning vibes, good songs, etc)? And yes, on the eve of Halloween (isn't Halloween itself an eve?) they dressed up. In their Weezer snuggies.
