Jelly Pool Party: Health, The Black Lips and Grupo Fantasma

Under a golden scorched Brooklyn sky sprinkled with some potentially scary rain clouds, Jelly's Pool Parties entered their third week at the Williamsburg Waterfront in Brooklyn, New York. This week's scheduled lineup was an electric play bill including ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, Grupo Fantasma, Health, and Black Lips.

Experimental rock act Health showed up and performed with a vengeance, banging on their instruments and whipping the crowd into a frenzy resembling a Mayan sacrificial ceremony. No bloody corpses here - just mostly sunburned youth eagerly wanting more of the LA-based band's distinct and tasty medicine.

The echo and reverb were turned up sky high.

Songs like Triceratops, Crimewave and Gutter Pills bellowed out emotionally radical sounds, distorted disco blare and militant marching beats from the drums - invoking the crowd to jump and shake their fists in seemingly full approval.

Long live HEALTH!

Next to take the stage were the dream-like, mind-blowing and altered vibrations of Atlanta's Black Lips.

All the pop-eyed kids who knew the words to the catchy throwback sounds bounced, shook and shimmied up, down and all around while everyone else played nicely even sometimes pretending themselves to know the words to the surf n' turf songs.

Not so excited were the security who endured a major failure in maintaining order during the Black Lips set. There was some serious PG-13 mayhem with squirt guns hoisted, bodies being passed and multi-colored Converse Chuck Taylors soaring through the air.

As lead man Cole Alexander walked the erected hands of his fans, rebellious 19-year old's under the influence of way too much lollipop sugar screamed every lyric while sandwiching the security giants between the stage speakers and steal barricades.

Lightning and rain storms ended the day a bit earlier then expected, but have no fear, Jelly continues the free shows throughout the rest of the 2009 summer.
