Michael Jackson Remembered

Yesterday afternoon, June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson died of cardiac arrest in Los Angeles. Jackson, always surrounded by speculation and rumors of ill health, could go on no longer. Jackson was 50.

Jackson was in the public eye for most of his life and was a tragic figure, enduring accusations of child molestation, financial difficulties, and ridicule over his extensive plastic surgery. Despite this, Jackson remained the most popular performer in the world, and his best material is untouchable. One is hard pressed to find pop albums more catchy or danceable, or sonically impeccable, than Off The Wall or Thriller.

Jackson, of course, was in rehearsals for a large scale comeback comprised of fifty shows in London, set to begin on July 13. Those shows will never happen; we make do with the memories we already had, of a musical career that will never be matched.

What people are saying:

Diddy: "Michael Jackson showed me that you can actually see the beat. He made the music come to life!! He made me believe in magic. I will miss him!" [twitter.com/iamdiddy]

Mariah Carey: "No artist will ever take his place. His star will shine forever." [twitter.com/mariahcarey]

Quincy Jones: "To this day, the music we created together on Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad is played in every corner of the world and the reason for that is because he had it all…talent, grace, professionalism and dedication." [via CNN tv]

Diana Ross: "I am unable to imagine this. My heart is hurting. I am in prayer for his kids and the family." [MTV]

Paul McCartney: "It's so sad and shocking. I feel privileged to have hung out and worked with Michael. He was a massively talented boy-man with a gentle soul. His music will be remembered forever and my memories of our time together will be happy ones." [AP]

Madonna: "I can't stop crying over the sad news. I have always admired Michael Jackson. The world has lost one of the greats, but his music will live on forever! My heart goes out to his three children and other members of his family. God bless." [TMZ]

In his 1988 autobiography, MOON WALK, Michael Jackson wrote: â??The way Elvis destroyed himself interests me, because I don't ever want to walk those grounds myself.â?? But the King of Pop apparently changed his mind about The King of Rock, the father-in-law he never met. His ex-wife, Lisa Marie Presley, recalled how in 1993 he told her â??with an almost calm certainty, â??I am afraid that I am going to end up like him, the way he did.â??" Each of the legendary stars my THE ROCK AND ROLL BOOK OF THE DEAD, The Fatal Journeys of Rockâ??s Seven Immortals (to be released by Citadel next month), also predicted an early demise. â??Iâ??m dead already,â?? said Jimi Hendrix, just before his mysterious end at age 27. â??I wonder if Iâ??ll get as much publicity as him,â?? said Janis Joplin, who fatally ODed six weeks later, also at 27. â??Youâ??re drinking with Number 3,â?? Jim Morrison toasted his friends shortly afterwards. Cobain wanted to go out â??in a flame of glory like Hendrix.â?? He, too, joined Club 27. John Lennon had premonitions of an early, violent end. Jerry Garcia was amazed to reach 53, having clinically died in the hospital nine years before. As for Elvis, â??Iâ??m self-destructive,â?? he confessed. â??But thereâ??s not a lot I can do about it.â?? His wife, Priscilla, tried to to save him. Likewise, her daughter, Lisa Marie, wrote of her â??quest to save Michael from certain self-destructive behavior.â?? According to biographer, Ian Halperin (UNMASKED: The Final Years of Michael Jackson, 2009), when Janet, Tito, and Randy staged a drug intervention on their famous brother in 2001, he sent them away saying, â??Iâ??ll be dead in a year anyway.â?? The star was indeed in desperate physical condition and taking many prescription drugs now â?? not only pain killers, tranquilizers, and sedatives, but powerful antibiotic cocktails. He had cancelled appearances due to â??back problems,â?? â??exhaustion,â?? and the â??flu.â?? In his last years, Elvis had done the same. Both Kings had been diagnosed with stress-related Lupus, noted for such symptoms and many far more debilitating ones. Jackson also suffered from AAD -- Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, a rare lung ailment, with emphysema-like symptoms. He was injected with pulmonary protein from human blood, a treatment usually successful, but not with him. He was now often bed or wheelchair bound, suffering from vision loss, weight loss, rashes, hyperventilation, nausea, insomnia, mental disorientation. Some of these are symptoms of Lupus, some of AAD. But all are the symptoms of advanced AIDS. Queenâ??s Freddy Mercury suffered from the same ailments. The day before he died in 1991, the singer confirmed long-standing rumors that he had AIDS and was homosexual. HIV is most commonly contracted sexually or through blood transfusion. Given his prolific surgical history, Jackson likely received a transfusion at some time. But that he may have been infected in this manner seems less likely than the alternative. Biographer Halperin presents a compelling case that Jackson was an active homosexual and â??playing a truly dangerous game.â?? Whatever Michael Jacksonâ??s disease in fact was, it seems indisputable that it caused him excruciating pain, both physical and psychological. In his final years he was ingesting Demerol, Dilaudid Vistaril, Xanax, Zoloft, Prosac, Proilosec, and Ritalin on a daily basis and at a monthly cost of $48,000. Near the end, he begged his nurse for Propofol, a general anesthesia for surgery. In the final eight months of his own life, Elvis was prescribed 10,000 sedatives, amphetamines, and narcotics. Insiders insisted he, like his son-in-law, demanded his â??medicineâ?? and refused to take no for an answer. When Elvisâ??s personal physician, Dr. George Nichopoulos, aka â??Needle Nick,â?? once threatened to cut off his supply, Elvis shot him. After the starâ??s fatal OD, Dr. Nichopoulos was tried for second-degree murder. Though acquitted, he lost his medical license. Elvisâ??s father, Vernon, tried to have him assassinated in a football stadium. The lawyer for Michaelâ??s own personal physician, Dr. Conrad Murray, states that his client never injected the star with Demerol, nor had he prescribed him narcotics. The coroner discovered pill residue in the his stomach and countless injection sites all over the body. According to ABC news, Murrayâ??s Houston medical clinic was closed in 2002 for being what authorities called a â??pill mill.â?? Like Elvis, Michael completed several hospital detoxes but afterwards soon fell off the wagon again. So, too, had John Lennon, Janis Joplin, Jerry Garcia, and Kurt Cobain. Family and friends tried to get Hendrix and Morrison to detox, but failed. Of all these â??living legends,â?? the two Kings were unquestionably the biggest, and pressures on them proportional. Both too were trying to revive their careers against near impossible odds and in spite of their desperate physical conditions. Jacksonâ??s friend and publicist, Michael Leaven, was not surprised by his tragic end, attributing it to â??prolonged stress.â?? This is a euphemism for how all the stars died. From the crushing creative pressure of public demand; from trying to live up to an near-divine image; from being the never-ending object of gossip and rumor; being surrounded by exploiters and parasites; and, in the end, being alone and adrift in spite of the adoration of millions. We, the fans, are not only saddened, devastated, by the news of Michael Jacksonâ??s passing â?? but we are uncomprehending. He and the others achieved what the rest of us can only dream of â?? how could they throw it all away? What is this hell inside the heaven of superstardom that consumed them all? In short, though we may one day discover how the King of Pop died, it is unlikely that we will ever understand why.

Undoubtedly, the King of Pop have had made a dramatic change in everyone's lives, he mesmerized everyone. As Michael Jackson has passed away, many people are looking for Neverland Ranch photos. Neverland Ranch photos are somewhat of a rarity, as few people entered the now dilapidated estate over the last few years, many of the most recent snapshots are all aerial photos. The ranch almost slipped into foreclosure, and was bought by Colony Capital, an investment firm, with Jackson still owning a stake, despite falling behind on the secured loans for the property. The debt concerning Neverland still has to be settled, and it's been made clear that Jackson won't be buried there. Secured loans may be needed to pay it off, and recent Neverland Ranch photos aren't much to look at.
