Fans of The Who Take to the Web and It Ain't Pretty
It's one of the most iconic, memorable moves in rock: The Who's Pete Townshend, swinging his arm high over his head and then down to a full low extension, going in a circle, sharply strumming the strings of his guitar on each down (or up) swing. It's the ultimate guitar move. And Pete Townshend made it famous, if not outright inventing it.
So who better than The Who to hold a contest seeking out the best windmill air guitarists on earth (actually, the US or UK)? The prizes are pretty cool. According to their site:
The grand prize winner, selected by a panel of judges, will receive a Fender guitar, personally signed by Pete Townshend, with 25 runners-up winning a copy of Maximum R&B Live and other prizes.
Nice. And to clarify, that's not the Maximum R&B CD box set that's been out since the '90s, but rather a new double DVD set. So how does this all work? Simple. Watch their video and then leave as a video response a video of you doing your best Pete Townshend. Or, as the case may be, your worst. For example...
This guy gets an A for effort, but a D for performance. Oddly, his best windmills are cut off at the end. Song: "My Generation."
Here's another old-timer, out of breath after ten seconds of "Won't Get Fooled Again." Still, points for his f*ck-you attitude at the end: "Pete who?"
This kid may be the best one. Tight quarters but boundless energy. Tommy classic "Sparks" a unique song choice.
Andy's not so shabby himself.
This one is notable for its use of multiple cameras angles (um, two). There's even an edit! "A Quick One While He's Away"...
And finally, the most literal windmill of the bunch. Ha ha, etc.
