Styx Visits The White House!

Kilroy Was Here!

Clearly with "nothing to do, and all day to do it," Styx, the Chicago album-oriented rock heroes, this week got a quick tour of the White House, taking photos in the White House briefing room and other press work areas. Obviously, the press was on hand to document this momentous occasion. The band, in town to play a gig, posed for pics behind the podium (shots from MSNBC).

It's a win-win situation for all involved. The band, with too much time on their hands (see what I did there?) got to visit the White House. Reporters who worried they'd never have the chance to write about Styx were able to report on Styx. The briefing room hosted possibly its first mullet ever. "Nothing to do, and all day to do it"—hell yeah! It was an Illinois band visiting the White House of an Illinois president. Domo arigato, Mr. Roboto, etc. And speaking of that:

But what do we, the American public, think of Styx visiting the White House? Or, more specifically, what do CNN.com commenters think of this? Glad you asked:

"Don't blame me. I voted for McCain." - Marc in Virgina

"What about the Alliance between all these Idi8otic Kings and Queens arouhnd the world. You think they are not also taking notice about Iran?" - Zero

"Can someone explain why… with EVERYTHING going on in the world today that demands attention… some has been band from the 70's is visiting the White House?? This country is in SERIOUS trouble!" - ck

"You haters suck. we cant help it if our president is so cool everyone wants to see him, even old 70's arena bands that really rocked in their day." - Phat Elvis

"Phat Elvis" is the only one with a head on his shoulders. Haters DO suck. And speaking of Elvis, the original phat/fat Elvis Presley was another famous musical guest at the White House. Presley, a supporter of Nixon's, arrived at the White House unannounced in December 1970 and offered his services as an undercover agent, hoping to combat the "hippie and drug culture" prevalent at the time. He also presented Nixon with a Colt .45.

More recent visitors to the Oval Office were The Dead. President Obama, reportedly a fan, invited the band for a visit during the DC stop on the April tour. Obama and the Dead hooked up for a sweet St. Stephen>The Eleven jam before ordering pizza and watching The Big Lebowski. Times have changed.

Don't the members of Styx realize that not all of their fans share their political views? Being a big Styx fan myself, I would prefer that they kept their political opinions to themselves (and that goes for remarks at concerts also!) Public displays such as this could end up offending fans and I know how important fans are to this band!

Maybe if Tommy Shaw hadn't hijacked the band from Dennis DeYoung, I'd be proud of this. Also: only two of the members in the current incarnation are from Illinois - nice try.
