Evan Dando: It's A Shame About Pay
Baby He's Bored! Or pissed off. Evan Dando, the frontman of the Lemonheads, those New England power poppers best known for a string of hits in the early and mid-'90s, is suing General Motors. It's a good-looking David versus down-on-its-luck Goliath battle!
It's also doomed to have an unpleasant result for Dando.
Dando is claiming that a TV spot that aired last year featured music that sounded alarmingly (to Dando) like his signature tune, "It's A Shame About Ray." The ad (below) features a jaunty melody with poppy instrumentation that, if someone shook you by the lapel and made you listen repeatedly, might sound a little like "It's A Shame About Ray." A little. Maybe. A bit. Hmmm, judge for yourself:
And, for comparison's sake, here's the Lemonheads' version of performing "It's A Shame About Ray" last year.
You can kinda hear some similarities. The whistler certainly sounds like he or she might have "It's A Shame About Ray" stuck in their head. But good luck winning this one, Evan. And if you win, bear in mind that General Motors is freaking bankrupt. Good timing, though—the Lemonheads have a new album, Varshons, coming out June 23rd.
GM had no comment on the suit, because they can't afford spokespeople.
