Interview: Crocodiles Write Haikus, Cover Dylan
"Outlaw
We recently had the opportunity to ply Blender SXSW favorite Crocodiles with some questions in between stops of their busy tour as they support their 4/28 release Summer of Hate. Not only did Brandon Welchez and Charles Rowell take the time to answer our questions and write poetry for us, they also hooked us up with a cover of Bob Dylan's "Outlaw Blues" (further below, exclusively on Blender.com) that we insist you listen to.
BLENDER: From the little bit we've seen a lot of your promotional materials are in black and white. Are crocodiles color-blind?
BRANDON WELCHEZ: No, we see in full color. Listen to the songs - they are full color.
B: What's something else about Crocodiles that the general public might not know?
CHARLES ROWELL: There is a lot that they don't know and we like it that way.
B: How did you celebrate after signing with Fat Possum Records?
BW: We didn't want an advance - we probably high fived and smoked a joint or something. And went to work the next day...
CR: Bought some leather chaps at the Crypt and road our bikes down to the Eagle for a topless barbecue.
B: Who, alive or dead, do you wish you could collaborate with on your next album?
BW: Alan Vega, Sky Saxon, Group Inerane, Sonic Boom or or or or or ...
CR: Martin Hannett, Phil Spector, Charles Manson
B: What's been your most rock 'n roll moment so far?
CR: Hasn't happened yet, probably never will.
B: If you had to pick one, Joy Division or New Order?
BW: Both great, too different to decide...
CR: Joy Division
B: If you weren't playing music what would you be doing?
BW: Working
CR: Playing soccer.
B: What's the first album you ever bought?
BW: Don't remember - probably INXS Kick or something like that.
CR: Iggy Pop - Lust For Life.
B: First show you went to?
BW: With my parents: Neil Diamond in New Jersey when I was 5. By myself: Some local punk show with crappy bands when I was 13 (it was life changing tho, even tho the bands were lame in retrospect).
CR: Rolling Stones
B: What's been the best show you've played so far?
CR: House parties in Oakland.
BW: An amazing house show in Oakland last year. Can't remember the date. Don't know why, but it was just felt SPECIAL.
B: Could you describe in a haiku your recent SXSW experience?
GOOD MAGIC MUSHROOMS
BUT I WISH WE COULDA SLEPT MORE
AND TOO MUCH DRIVING
- Brandon Welchez
Chocolate covered magic
sleepless nights running around drunk
in the new york times!
- Charles Rowell
B: Besides world domination, have you set goals for yourself, or established some sort of 5-year plan?
BW: We'd like for people to not forget about us in 6 months, as happens with 99% of bands out there.
CR: Take it easy. It's a marathon, not a sprint.
