Radiohead And A Pretty Model Teach Us About Homelessness

A new PSA for the The National Coalition For The
Homeless contains a Radiohead song "MK 1"
from In Rainbows (Special Edition). The PSA shows a model picking through the trash for
food and sleeping in a cardboard box, followed by the sentence "It can
happen to anyone." If I didn't know what this was for, I might think someone had videotaped me on New Year's Eve!
I think the commercial sort of works...though the girl's decadent outfit kind of makes me think she's just out of it after a late night of partying, and not that she's somehow found herself homeless. The idea is that we're supposed to identify with her, thinking, wow, that looks like me! I shouldn't be so mean to homeless people now. But I don't know, if homeless people looked like that it might make me hate them even more. For me, the best use of popular music to teach us about homelessness definitely has to be this gem:
