Using his native Funk and R&B, as well as the otherworldly sounds of Kraftwerk, as springboards, Motorcity madman Juan Atkins ventured into uncharted territory in the early 1980s, creating the now ubiquitous sound of techno music. Relying heavily on synthesizers, a sound he compared to "UFOs landing on records," as well as 4/4 disco bass beats and a sci-fi-inspired aesthetic, Atkins and his Detroit cohorts churned out icy dance floor classics like "Alleys of your Mind" and "Techno City," earning the genre-pushing mastermind the title "Godfather of Techno."20+ years later, the globetrotting Atkins still lives up to the name, producing tracks and weaving together funky DJ sets that are anything but terrestrial. Tonight the robotic beatsmith touches down in New York City, where he'll bring his dance-inducing beats to APT's intimate basement. Though the party is technically a hush-hush affair, Blender's been given the green light to a post a listing. And with that said, we thoroughly encourage you to go, because this shindig is FREE.
