An intriguing hobby in the recording community is the swapping of classic tracks. Not fully finished, mixed-and-everything songs, but the individual instrument tracks. Ever heard only the drums and bass on, say, Inner City Blues by Marvin Gaye? No? You should; it's pretty mindblowing. The artist may not have wanted you to hear these isolated tracks outside of the context of the finished song, but the unaccompanied performances are undeniably fascinating. Not only that, but these tracks, in an internet age when almost every track ever released, and many that weren't, can be found with a minimal amount of online sleuthing, represent one of the final frontiers of classic rock n' roll bootlegging. It's difficult to find these things. So when you actually get your virtual hands on one, it's quite satisfying.
And yes, it's satisfying even if what you're listening to is now on YouTube and everyone and their Van Halen lovin' grandmother has heard or will hear it. How could listening to David Lee Roth, and the rest of VH, recording vocals to Hot For Teacher, not be? The vocals, such as they are here, include the song's singing, as well as the banter ("Whaddaya think the teacher's gonna look like this year?"). And if you listen closely, you can hear the instrumental tracks coming through Dave's headphones. Amazing.
Here is Hot For Teacher. And if you'd like to hear Running With The Devil in a similar manner, click here.
