Bon Scott Forever
Australian officials have found a permanent spot for a statue of Bon Scott, AC/DC's original frontman who died of alcohol poisoning in 1980 at age 33. "It's true Bon in his rock and roll singer stance," said Doug Thorncroft, president of the late singer's fanclub who rallied to give the replica a home at the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbor (on the west side of the country). "His jeans are painted on with his package bulging out"—which you can now behold with your own eyes! And though it may sound bizarre to commemorate a famously debauched musician in such placid environs, Scott actually joins a long line of pop and rockers who've been immortalized in metal and/or stone.
A quick history:
Austin honored guitar great Stevie Ray Vaughn with a likeness that was erected in in 1994. Seattle celebrated their native son, Jimi Hendrix, with a statue unveiled in 1997. Michael Jackson took matters into his own hands and famously commissioned temporary stand-ups of himself to stand at various sites in Europe—including the very spot in Prague where a Joseph Stalin monument once loitered!—to promote his 1996 HIStory tour. Montreux, Switzerland, issued a statue (and stamp!) in 2003 to honor Freddie Mercury, Queen's legendary frontman who died of complications induced by HIV in 1991. In 2005, friends and family erected a $100,000 Johnny Ramone at the Hollywood cemetery where he's buried. Tupac Shakur got his in 2005, at the—who knew?—Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts near Atlanta. And finally, Jamaica has sundry representations of their greatest export, Bob Marley, around the country, and just two months ago, Serbia unveiled it's own Marley.
