While the following video of 7th graders debating Obama Vs. McCain to the tune of T.I.’s “Whatever You Like” is wildly cheesy and shrill, I wouldn’t feel right simply poking fun at it and dismissing it in the manner typical of the usual blog post. For one thing, these kids are engaged in the time-honored tradition of academic debate, even while putting their own modern spin on it. Secondly, they’re not only aware of the issues integral to the current presidential race, they’ve also been required to examine both candidates equally—thereby learning nonpartisanship at an early age. And lastly, it’s a bunch of kids dancing around in school uniforms, singing, “You can vote however you like!” That’s cute. But while I won’t declare this video a joke, there is still a fairly ironic punchline. T.I., to whom this rendition owes its melody, cannot actually vote however he likes, as the multiplatinum rapper is also a convicted felon.
