Watch: White Van Music - New Album from Jake One Should Get Pretty Good Mileage
I’m not entirely sure what, if any, is the symbolism behind the titular vehicle on the cover of Jake One’s upcoming White Van Music (Oct. 7), but maybe the producer is hoping his ride has enough horsepower to leap the ever-widening chasm between underground and mainstream hip-hop. The beatsmith is actually signed to 50 Cent's G Unit Records, and has made tracks featuring household names like 50 and Mary J. Blige. That said, his own album is being released on a decidedly lower profile label, Rhymesayers—home of indie rap acts like Atmosphere and Brother Ali. Needless to say, neither 50 nor MJB make an appearance here, but White Van does feature vocal contributions from artists across a respectably wide spectrum of hip-hop, from MF Doom and Little Brother to Freeway and Busta Rhymes. Jake One’s signature dynamic, sample-heavy sound does a good job of uniting the various voices. As is often the case these days, the cut featuring Doom is a standout—plus, it’s called “Get ‘Er Done.” How can you beat that?
